Donald Sultan is a master of what is popularly known as Abstract Representation. He brings, in short, a formalist, abstract sensibility to his iconographic images of still life and other figurative imagery. He has also delved more recently into painting industrial scenes and conventional landscapes. Rebecca Lax sat down with Sultan at his Manhattan studio to discuss his work and long career.
