Here It Is, the Kara Walker Selfie Generator

It’s been two months since Kara Walker‘s sugar-coated sphinx opened, quickly becoming the most selfie-inducing art installation of the year. Now, with the installation slated to close July 7, a new website is offering those who can’t make it to the Creative Time-commissioned exhibition in Brooklyn the opportunity to register their presence digitally. That’s right, it’s a Kara Walker selfie generator.

The website SugarSelfie.us allows users to superimpose a picture of themselves against either the front or the back of Walker’s monumental sculpture A Subtlety, and voila!

As the site boasts, in its all-caps intro: “CANT MAKE IT TO THE DOMINIO FACTORY TO TAKE PICTURES OF YOURSELF IN FRONT OF KARA WALKER’S SUGAR BABY?? YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY NEED NOT KNOW!! REALISTIC SELFIE GENERATOR!!! ITS LIKE YOU ARE REALLY THERE!!!!”

The result, predictably, is not quite as convincing at the real deal, but tweaking the color and transparency settings can produce something close to the desired effect.
