Artist Ed Albers, 59, Dies In Gramercy Park Blaze

Ed Albers, a 59-year-old Dutch-born painter, died in a fire yesterday in his Manhattan apartment, according to several news reports. Firefighters discovered Albers in his third-floor apartment on East 16th Street after they got the fire under control.
Albers, who was suffering from smoke inhalation and burns, was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Also killed in the fire was Albers’s dog, a German shepard named Captain. The fire was deemed acccidental, an FDNY official told reporters.
According to reports in the New York Post and the Wall Street Journal, Albers worked as an apprentice in Holland restoring stained glass before coming to the US in 1975. Albers studied at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C., in 1975. According to a Lehman College biography of Albers, his works were exhibited at the Grace Gallery in Washington, New York’s Fawbush Gallery, and at the Stanford Museum in Connecticut. In 1987, he received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
According to Albers’s LinkedIn page, he has been self-employed for the last 40 years or so. A group of 30 or so paintings on his studio page via Picasa shows mostly abstract paintings with biomorphic-looking forms and experiments with light and illumination.
