As reported in the Austrian daily newspaper Der Standard, Bruce Nauman is the 2014 winner of the Friedrich Kiesler prize for architecture and art. The prize of €55,000 (approximately $76,000) is alternately awarded every two years by the Republic of Austria and the City of Vienna, respectively. Past recipients include Frank Gehry and Olafur Eliasson.
An international jury lauded the artist “for his strong but not mimetic relation with Kiesler’s concepts, especially regarding the sensorial and dynamic perception of the space. In keeping with the statutes of the Austrian Frederick Kiesler Prize for Architecture and the Arts, the prize is awarded for ‘extraordinary achievements in architecture and the arts that relate to Frederick Kiesler’s experimental and innovative attitudes and his theory of “correlated arts” by transcending the boundaries between the traditional disciplines.’”
Many recognize Kiesler as the Austro-American artist-architect commissioned in 1942 by Peggy Guggenheim to design the gallery museum that would become known as Art of This Century and house her collection of Surrealist and abstract art.
In response to the question, “Will you accept the prize?,” the 72-year-old Nauman reportedly replied, “It makes sense.”
The date of the ceremony has not yet been announced.
