Fashion Designer Pierre Cardin Opens Museum Dedicated to Himself

Legendary fashion designer, 92-year-old Pierre Cardin, will open his own museum tomorrow, November 13th.
The Museum Pierre Cardin will house “Past, Present, Future” a permanent exhibition that will showcase 200 models in Cardin’s haute-couture designs, accessories, and jewelry. From his first collection in 1953, the show looks back on his geometric, avant-garde, and “space age” designs.
Cardin moved to Paris in 1945, where he started his career working with Elsa Schiaparelli until he became head of Christian Dior’s tailleure atelier in 1947. Three years later, the designer launched his own eponymous label.
Although highly regarded as one of France’s most iconic designers, his brand name star power began to wane when in 1994, Cardin decided to show his collection to only a small circle of selected clientele and journalists.
Cardin’s other interests include restaurants and automobiles. He bought Maxim’s restaurant in 1981 and opened up branches in New York, London, and Beijing. The designer also entered industrial design when American Motors Corporation hired him to design the AMC Javelin car interior.
Museum Pierre Cardin will open November 13, 2014 at Le Marais.
