Music Producer Tim Renner to Head Berlin’s Cultural Policy

Tim Renner has been named Berlin’s new culture secretary. The appointment follows a tax scandal, which saw Renner’s predecessor, André Schmitz, step down from the post at the beginning of February. According to reports by the dpa, Berlin mayor Klaus Wowereit presented Renner in a press conference on Thursday, explaining that he would take up the post beginning on April 28th. Rather more casual in address than his predecessor, Renner currently serves as CEO of Berlin-based music label Motor Entertainment and was previously the head of Universal Music Germany, a job for which he moved to the capital from Hamburg in 2002. As reactions across the political spectrum poured in on Friday, Renner was deemed a perfect fit to replace Schmitz. What he’ll have in store for art—Schmitz was a keen supporter of efforts like the Berlin Art Week and Gallery Weekend—remains to be seen.
