String of Berlin Museum Closures Begin
The Berlinische Galerie will close its doors from Tuesday. It is one of three major Berlin museums that will close this year for renovations. The others are the Neue Nationalgalerie and portions of the Pergamon Museum.
The Berlinische Galerie will remain inaccessible to visitors for the shortest period of time, roughly half a year. Museum officials say that they plan to reopen the institution in spring of 2015. The museum’s exhibition halls as well as its storage facilities are to receive technical upgrades during the renovation process.
Mies van der Rohe’s landmark building which holds the Neue Nationalgalerie will also close for renovation, led by David Chipperfield Architects and beginning in early 2015. Chipperfield, who previously renovated Berlin’s Neues Museum to great acclaim says he estimates that the project will take approximately three years to complete. It will be the first time any significant work has been performed on the building since it was erected from 1965-1968.
On September 29th, the Pergamon Museum will begin a process of shutting off portions of its halls which house the world renowned Pergamon Altar. The initial stages of those renovations won’t conclude until 2019. Further improvements to the structure will carry on through 2025 or 2026.
