Tracey Emin has won a competition for new public artworks in Sydney’s city center, the Telegraph reports. The former YBA will place 60 bronze bird sculptures across the city, perching them, “above doorways and awnings, enticing walkers along the thoroughfare,” according to the city council. It is said to recall her installation of a bird atop a 13-foot-tall pole in New York City last year.
Titled The Distance of Your Heart the proposed work will be installed by 2017 and is part of a £5.2 million ($9.3 million) project to install contemporary artworks across the city center. “The artworks … will cement Sydney’s reputation as a capital of culture and creativity,” Sydney mayor Clover Moore told the paper.
It is one of three works that are part of the project. Junya Ishigami’s Cloud Arch has reportedly drawn heavy criticism. The £2 million piece sees a 170-foot length of “cloud” twirl into the sky. The paper says that some detractors on social media have said it resembles dental floss or a piece of spaghetti. Hany Armanious’ £1.4 million work sees a 45-foot tall milk crate plop down in a part near Sydney’s central train station. Emin, Ishigami, and Armanious were chosen from over 700 entries from 25 countries.
