There was a great deal to celebrate yesterday in Madison Square Park: the coming of fall, the beginning of New York Fashion Week, and of course, the last days of Rachel Feinstein‘s whimsical sculpture trio, Folly.
The solution was a one-night performance art festival sponsored by Marianne Boesky Gallery and the Madison Square Park Conservency, in which the park came alive thanks to artists including Allison Brainard & Cara Chan, Sofia Coppola, Molly Lowe, Sonya Kitchell, and Whitney Biennial participants My Barbarian. Some performances were more inspiring than others—singer-songwriter Sonya Kitchell gave a rousing concert beside the Cliff House sculpture, while smaller pieces scattered throughout the park, like a man standing upside-down inside a trash can, were a bit vexing. Feinstein, ever the fashion darling, floated about in an ethereal purple gown, accompanied by model India Menuez in a coordinating get-up.
It was an undeniably spirited end-of-summer event—a passerby inquired as to what was happening, and after hearing the explanation remarked, “I’ve lived here all my life, and this is why I love New York more every day.” And given the star-studded guest list at Folly‘s opening, it came as no surprise that some of the most influential people in both art and fashion could be spotted amongst the onlookers.
After sunset, VIPs made their way to NeueHouse, where a similarly well-attended after party took place. There, guests exchanged tales of summer travels while sampling Sofia Coppola’s canned champagne, which most agreed was not as bad as they might have imagined. All in all, it was the perfect farewell to the art world’s quiet season.
