Can you guess what this series of Banksy dioramas made from LEGO is called? Bricksy. Photographer Jeff Friesen combines two seemingly disparate pop culture obsessions—LEGO and street art—to create a project guaranteed to go viral. As Mashable puts it, “Friesen cleverly reimagines Banksy’s world-renowned images, giving them a considerable clean up. When placing the originals in a more light-hearted context, the subversive artworks are subverted themselves in a tongue-in-cheek fashion.” Subverting the subversive. It was only a matter of time.

Friesen, for his part, appears to have a sense of humor about the project. “After constructing an apocalyptic urban wasteland out of LEGO you either have to laugh or contemplate what weird turns your life is taking,” the award-winning Canadian photographer told Mashable. He claims the LEGO bricks belong to his young daughter, but that many of these scenes took up to five hours to craft. Initially, it was just a fun way to spend time together, but as he’s grown more serious about the project, his daughter has been understandably miffed: “She’s playing at the side and we’re fighting over bricks,” Friesen revealed to BBC.

The full range of brick sculptures (not all of them Banksy-based) can be seen on Friesen’s Instagram. In addition, another account, which may or may not belong to the elusive street artist, has been posting them in conjunction with the works they replicate. Friesen is apparently keen to start branching out to other art stars, perhaps tackling Damien Hirst next. We trust his daughter to point out that it’s already been done.
