Art Basel has arrived in Hong Kong this week, reminding us that it’s probably the best fair to ride the intersection of both quality and novelty of the works on display. You can check out our editor’s picks of the top 10 most eye-opening artworks at the fair, and you can see our guide for exploring the city beyond Art Basel, but let’s dive a little deeper. We’ve rounded up local galleries with must-see exhibitions you can’t afford to leave off your itinerary this week.
You have plenty of options of internationally renowned artists with solo shows in the city. First stop: Wolfgang Tillmans presents a body of work relating to the pleasure and claustrophobia of “self-contained environments” at David Zwirner, where many of the photographs are being exhibited for the very first time. Then, you can swing by Simon Lee for a show of Jim Shaw’s most recent surrealist, collage-like paintings. Urban art fans might want to head to Perrotin next, where KAWS continues his superbright, toy-like practice. If you’re more interested in works specifically by Chinese artists, make a beeline to Parkview Art Hong Kong where you can see “Beijing Abstract,” which features range of gestural paintings by Feng Lianghong, Li Di, Ma Ke Lu, and others. Lastly, be sure not to miss “Skin on Skin,” a solo show by celebrated Vietnamese-American artist Dinh Q. Lê. In this visually potent and geometric series, he explores the changing views on sexuality in Vietnam.
