This week, Hong Kong is host to its very own edition of the Affordable Art Fair. Now in its sixth year, the event brings together 115 galleries from China and around the world with a variety of contemporary works at approachable price points. But if you’re also interested in seeing work exhibited in the context of Hong Kong’s thriving gallery scene, there’s a bunch of major exhibitions that should be on your radar.
Let’s start with one of the long-running shows that’s closing soon: White Cube’s exhibition of Antony Gormley’s work is closing on May 19, and features a new series of writhing iron sculptures that expand on the artist’s ongoing fascination with abstracting the human body—they’re weird and interesting, and definitely not to be missed. Then, be sure to visit Pace Gallery before the Yoshitomo Nara “Ceramic Works and…” show closes, where, as the title suggests, you can see a variety of cute ceramic works alongside other media, such as Nara’s recent paintings, drawings, and photographs. Then, head over to Lehmann Maupin, where American artist Catherine Opie presents a series of photographs documenting some of the most stunning natural wonders in the United States, notably including Yosemite National Park. The photographer brings her unique magical sensibility to her subject matter, transforming our understanding of these mythical places.
And there’s more where that came from. Find artnet’s full list of picks below, and enjoy another art-packed week in Hong Kong.
