We can’t let Miami have all the fun, so let’s take a break from the beach and look across the pond to highlight the major gallery shows in London at the moment. While everyone else in England is a little distracted by all the Meghan Markle-related headlines, now might be the perfect time to slip in some serious art viewing.
For starters, American superstar Kehinde Wiley—of recent Obama-portrait-painting fame—currently has an ambitious exhibition of new work at Stephen Friedman Gallery through the end of January. For some more historical portraiture of a very different era, head over to Robilant & Voena for the noble “Splendour and Magnificence: Art from the European Courts” show, which features court painters such as Anthony van Dyck. Photography aficionados also have plenty to see, with Marian Goodman Gallery’s current Hiroshi Sugimoto solo show, as well as Magnum Photos’ moving presentation of the black-and-white work of American photographers Elliot Erwitt and Matt Black. Also not to be missed are the splashy abstract paintings of Jadé Fadojutimi at Pippy Houldsworth Gallery, nor the wide-ranging survey of contemporary German art over at Ben Brown Fine Arts.
In short, London has plenty to keep you busy through the end of the year, and then some. Find artnet’s full list of picks below, and get cracking.
