Must-See Art Guide: The Netherlands (While You Are Visiting TEFAF)

March is, without a doubt, one of the busiest months of the year in terms of art fairs; it’s like the holiday season for art lovers! After all the hustle and bustle in New York City around Armory week, it’s time for Maastricht to be in the spotlight! TEFAF Maastricht, considered one of the world’s leading art fairs, features artworks from 275 galleries from 20 countries.
Another vibrant city to satisfy your art appetite in the Netherlands is Amsterdam. The Dutch capital has a lot to offer, starting with the Annet Gelink Gallery, which is showing Polaroids by cinematographer Robby Müller. You can also visit the Rize Gallery to discover artworks by Christian Vallée, best known under the name Kriki, and founder of the group of painters Nuklé-Art and the punk band Les Envahisseurs. Awarded a Joan Mitchell Foundation grant in 1997, the multimedia artist Anthony Goicolea is presenting drawings integrated into an installation in his third solo exhibition held at the Ron Mandos Gallery. In addition, the highly anticipated Henri Matisse show will start at the end of the month at the Stedelijk Museum, the first major survey of works by the Modern artist in the Netherlands in over 60 years. For those you who prefer group exhibitions, enter into the world of Jānis Avotiņš, the Latvian painter whose photorealistic images gained him international acclaim, and who is sharing an exhibition with Adrián Melis at the Akinci gallery.
If TEFAF allows you some free time and you want to get off the beaten track, stop by the Hague, where Galerie West is displaying the latest project by New Zealand collective et al., which studies systems of surveillance, land rights, and the extents of public domain. There is also Otterlo, a small village located in the province of Gelderland, which hosts the Kröller-Müller museum, and features a selection of unique artworks by Dutch postwar artist Armando.
In March, art will be celebrated in the Netherlands, and you will definitely want to be a part of it!
