What You Need to Know: German artist Jana Schröder is currently the subject of a solo show with Alfonos Artiaco in Naples—her first with the gallery—entitled “D.A.M.” On view through June 22, 2024, the starting point for the body of work on view was the artist’s previous visit to the city of Naples, and a deepening interest in the legacy of Argentinian footballer Diego Armando Maradona. Considered widely as a cultural hero of the city (his number 10 jersey was officially retired in 2000), Maradona memorabilia and the blue and white of the Naples football club permeated the city and inspired Schröder to synthesize the cultural milieu with her own creative practice. Blue and white are pervasive in the show, and juxtaposed with works done in the colors of other teams. Together, the exhibition presents eleven canvases and eleven works on paper, tracing Schröder’s interrogation of Maradona and more specifically the myth that has surrounded him.
About the Artist: Originally from Brilon, Germany, and currently based in Düsseldorf, Jana Schröder is recognized for her formalist approach to painting and inimitable use of line and brushstroke. Her work was influenced early in her career by fellow German artist and professor Albert Oehlen while studying at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where she first began homing in on her unique, sinuous brushwork and exploration of color. She has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions, primarily in Germany as well as the United States, and her work is held within the public collection of Friedrichs Foundation, Bonn, and Miettinen Collection, Helsinki.
Why We Like It: Schröder’s singular focusing on process is brought to the fore in “D.A.M.,” as each painting and work on paper showcases the diversity of line and painterly execution. Further, deftly working through various hues, tints, and tones within a singular work, Schröder’s employment of color brings depth—both thematically and compositionally. In the three works D.A.M. rvl1, D.A.M. rvl2 (both 2023), and D.A.M. rvl3 (2024), the swirling blues and whites speak to the impressions she garnered moving through the streets of Naples, where Maradona’s team colors manifested seemingly everywhere. And the execution of the works call to mind the nimble and dynamic movement of the sport. On view alongside pieces in other team colors, the exhibition interprets the competition and arrangement of the game within a gallery setting.
