What You Need to Know: The exhibition “Alchemy” at Long-Sharp Gallery in Indianapolis showcases the work of Moira Cameron and Xavier Spiller-Cameron, a U.K.-based mother-and-son artist duo who are known as Spiller + Cameron. The pair develop an idea then work alternately to develop the final aesthetic. This show, which marks the first full-scale solo exhibition by the duo, consists of 17 mixed-media paintings from across five series of works. 

Why We Like It: All of the works are constructed of recycled, found materials (cotton sheets, paper, etc.) that have been carefully sewn together. The works give the impression of being one continuous material, on which the duo painted. The most recent series of paintings are each titled after a saint, each meant to watch over the viewers.

What the Gallery Says: “Spiller + Cameron describe their artistic process by virtue of alchemy—something which transmutes a base product into something beautiful, something worthy of contemplation. The artists create using discarded paint rags, and other materials, ‘upcycling’ them; they are primed, ironed, and meticulously stitched together, the resulting ‘collages’ so precise that the stitches almost disappear. At first glance the pieces look like one abstract work; details become more evident upon close inspection.”
