About the Artist: Artist Marcos Anziani was born in 1984 in the Dominican Republic, raised in the Bronx, and now lives and works in Connecticut. His paintings are characterized by bold, expressionistic brushstrokes, with lyrical and energetic slashes of color filling his canvases. Anziani’s style of abstraction takes inspiration from the works of Willem de Kooning, Joan Miró, and Jean-Michel Basquiat while incorporating motifs from both street art and naive art traditions. The artist is represented by Avant Gallery in Manhattan.

Why We Like It: Color drives the dynamism of Anziani’s canvases. Amid predominantly warm tones, he injects marks of sky blue, cool yellows, and bright greens that add sparks of movement to these paintings. Looking closely, one spies abstracted references to the human form. In his latest series, “Storytelling”, Anziani presents memories and visions from his own life, including experiences in the Caribbean, moments with his brother and father, and other dreamlike reveries from his past.

According to the Artist: “It is important to me to be able to place a moment in time from my perspective and surroundings into a canvas, guided by the subconscious and intuitive traumas and emotions, with the aim of encapsulating this period of human existence.”
