The artist group Myvillages hopes to give today’s East London a bit of the community spirit of the years gone by. Announced last night as the 2014 winners of the £40,000 CREATE Art Award, the group intends to use the funds to set up a community drinks production co-operative in the East London suburbs of Barking and Dagenham.

Myvillages is renewing a now extinct tradition of East Londoners temporary “going down to Kent” to work as harvesters. The project will be led by artist Kathrin Böhm and will feature a community garden, an orchard, a production space, as well as a shop. Local residents will also be invited to collect wild crops to be turned into seasonal drinks. The artists hope to produce up to 20,000 bottles by the end of the project. Tasty.
