Airbnb Gets into Arts Patronage

The London Design Festival will partner with sharing-economy-giant Airbnb for a project in Trafalgar Square during this fall’s edition of the festival, which will take place from September 13–21. The project, entitled A Place Called Home, plops four designers’ interpretations of home in the middle of the iconic square. Jasper Morrison, Patternity, Raw Edges, and Studioilse will each design an ideal one-room interior. Each worked off of a similar cabin-like exterior but will have free reign inside.
Jasper Morrison’s interpretation draws inspiration from a pigeon fancier’s house with a simple interior. The transforming room designed by Raw Edges has the ability to expand and contract, creating different household rooms at different times. Studioilse’s interior plays on the senses: visitors will hear doors closing and kettles boiling while catching a whiff of home and watching film projections of household objects. Patternity has created an interactive installation with three giant kaleidoscopes that visitors can look into and interact with. The project aims to provoke thought about how you live with design in homes.
