Time to book your tickets to Istanbul for next September. The Istanbul Biennial announced on Wednesday morning that Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev will “draft” the exhibition’s 14th edition. And, she’s enlisted the help of some of the greatest hits from her dOCUMENTA(13)—Pierre Huyghe, Anna Bohiguian, and William Kentridge among them—to direct the show.
In a typically nebulous statement, Christov-Bakargiev said: “The Istanbul Biennial will embark looking for where to draw the line, to withdraw, to draw upon, and to draw out. It will do so offshore, on the flat surfaces with our fingertips but also in the depths, underwater, before the enfolded encoding unfolds.”
The biennial will be Chirstov-Bakargiev’s first major curatorial effort since the Documenta in 2012. That exhibition sparked a fresh interest in intellectual, research-based art practices, and an aesthetic subtlety, all very much craved post-2008. Three years on, however, the art world will be on its toes to see if and how Christov-Bakargiev’s thinking has progressed, lest the Istanbul Biennial become a preemptive reunion show.
