Art Cologne has announced that Deutsche Bank will sponsor the fair’s New Contemporaries section for young galleries this year. Art Cologne has long been especially supportive of emerging galleries and artists. Since the 1990s the fair has featured a dedicated platform for young galleries no older than ten years.

This year the selection committee has chosen 29 international participants from Europe, North America, and Asia to exhibit their perspective on a range of contemporary mediums, from painting to photography, sculpture, video, and performance. Participants this year include Berlin’s Duve, Future Gallery, and PSM, Dublin’s Ellis King, LA’s OHWOW, and New York’s Kate Werble. They are among over 200 international galleries in total are set to take part in the 49th edition of Art Cologne.

Founded in 1967, Art Cologne is the world’s oldest art fair for modern and contemporary art. Spearheaded by the Cologne-based gallerists Hein Stünke and Rudolf Zwirner, the fair was created to attract new collectors to the stagnating 1960s German art scene. The Rhineland was especially fertile ground for a successful art fair due to its density of high net worth individuals emerging from the region’s strong industrial economy. In addition, Cologne’s central European geographical location made it easily accessible to collectors from all around Europe.
