Not at Art Basel? Don’t worry, we’ve got a great art event for you! It’s called “The Last Party” and celebrates the influence of New York’s Club culture on art from the mid 1970s to the early 1990s, and takes place at WhiteBox gallery.

But who was there back then, and more importantly, can clearly remember that far back? Anthony Haden-Guest of course, who was certainly there, though we do wonder about his recollection of events. He assures us, however, that his memory is in tip-top condition.

Anyway, here’s what he has to say about the idea behind the show:

“The Last Party celebrates the creative ferment that exploded in New York’s club culture in the mid 70s, following Watergate and the Vietnam War. It became a phenomenon whose influence spanned three decades and crossed continents until it waned in the early 90s.”

As to the content, “The Last Party” is a survey exhibition of fine art, graffiti and street art, photography, video, fashion, and memorabilia that curiously enough takes its  inspiration from Anthony Haden-Guest’s 1997 book, The Last Party: Studio 54, Disco and The Culture of the Night.

This exhibition will run throughout the summer at WhiteBox. Participating artists include Andres Serrano, Roberta Bayley, Glenn O’Brien, Karen Finley, David Gamble, Leon Golub, Ron Galella, Jerry Kerns, Roxanne Lowit, Alfredo Martinez, Ida Appelbroog, Harry Benson, Komar & Melamid, Adrian Piper, Luis Cruz Azaceta, Lorna Simpson, Anton Perich… and that’s just for starters. There over 50 more artists joining the event!

For those with a philanthropic spirit there is a fundraiser event next week and an online charity auction hosted by our good friends and colleagues at artnet Auctions.
