The Armory Show Lures Gagosian Back to the Piers for a Slimmed-Down 2018 Edition

The Armory Show is returning to Piers 92 and 94 this spring with a tweaked format and a few high-profile additions to its exhibitor list. The 24th edition of the fair, which runs March 7 to 11, will host 186 exhibitors in the Big Apple—18 fewer than last year.
Exhibitors returning to the fold after a hiatus include heavyweight Gagosian Gallery, which last participated in 2013; Perrotin, which last participated in 2011; and Regen Projects, which last participated in 2015. Thirty-nine galleries are making their Armory Show debut, including Hong Kong’s Pearl Lam Galleries and New York’s Van Doren Waxter.
The fair’s director (and artnet News’s former editor-in-chief) Benjamin Genocchio has also adjusted the layout and booth pricing structure in an effort to make the event more affordable for mid-size galleries and more navigable for visitors. “The result is a fair with fewer, larger booths and a greater emphasis on curated presentations,” Genocchio said in a statement.
This year’s fair expands Focus, a themed section dedicated to solo or two-person displays by lesser-known contemporary artists, by 30 percent. As the FT recently reported, exhibitors in this section will pay around 30 percent less per square foot than those in the main section. The sector, organized around the theme of art and technology, will be overseen by Gabriel Ritter, the contemporary art curator at the Minneapolis Institute of Art.
Meanwhile, the fair’s main section will offer increased booth sizes compared to previous years—though exhibitors will pay a premium fee of around $95 per square foot to help subsidize the smaller galleries in the Focus section. Gagosian is planning a solo presentation dedicated to the video art pioneer Nam June Paik, including a never-before-seen installation, and Jeffrey Deitch will present a solo booth of work by street artist JR.
This year also marks the Armory Show’s inaugural Curatorial Leadership Summit, a daylong gathering of curators from around the world. The event, chaired by Naomi Beckwith of the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, will be held on March 9.
