As the month of November commences, we are checking out exhibitions in New York City and Zurich, Switzerland that celebrate Contemporary female artists who excel in the realm of figurative art.
Martha Erlebacher Retrospective will be on view from November 7 to November 24 at 111 Franklin Street, New York, NY 10013.
New York Academy of Art will be honoring Martha Mayer Erlebacher (American, 1937–2013), former chair of their MFA program, with a poignant retrospective spanning the full 45-year career of the accomplished Figurative artist. On display will be various Neo-Classical still-life paintings, symbolic nudes, and an emotive self-portrait for which Erlebacher received a Commended Finalist Award at the Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition 2013, hosted by the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., earlier this year. Over the years, Erlebacher merged her striking technical abilities with her interests in anatomy and classical subject matter to produce work that touched upon cultural narratives from the past and present. In the series, Avant Duck: A Fowl History of Modern Art, the artist employed the image of a duck to illustrate her own take on well-known works of art of the 20th century. Viewers will find that the retrospective pays tribute to Erlebacher’s preeminent role in American painting.
Gabriella Gerosa will be on view from November 7 to November 30 at Rämistrasse 18, 8001 Zurich, Switzerland.
In Zurich, Fabian und Claude Walter will host an exhibition of works by video artist, Gabriella Rosa (Swiss, b.1964), who will also be presented with the Keller Wedekind Stiftung Art Prize for her contribution to Contemporary Figurative Art in Switzerland. Gerosa’s unaltered video footage of meticulously staged scenes, brings to life traditional subjects such as still-lifes and genre scenes; each composed scene is reiterated in slow and repetitive loops that denote unremitting permanence.
