New World Record for Markus Lüpertz

Cologne-based auction house Lempertz achieved a new world auction record for a work by Markus Lüpertz at their spring contemporary art sale. The sculpture, a six-part work in bronze titled Pietrasanta Bronzen: Frau mit Spiegel. Der Schauspieler. Mann mit blauem Ball. Der Gärtner. Odaliske. Akt mit Spielzeug (1993-1995) sold for €293,000 ($399,182), just inside its €250,000–300,000 presale estimate.

Consigned from a German private collection, the work was feature in Lüpertz’s major 2009 retrospective at the Kunst- und Ausstellungshalle der Bundesrepublik Deutschland (Art and Exhibition Halls of the Federal Republic of Germany). The previous auction record for Markus Lüpertz was set in June 2011 at Sotheby’s London. There, his painting, Palette I (1973) sold for £205,250 ($329,824) on a £80,000–120,000 estimate.
