A large number of Arte Povera works made up the bulk of a £38.4 million ($64.3 million) night at Christie’s New York on February 11. With 109 lots, “Eyes Wide Open: An Italian Vision” drew upon the private holdings of Italian collectors Nerio and Marina Fossati. Alberto Burri’s Combustione Plastica (1961–62), purchased by the Helly Nahmad Gallery, was the evening’s top seller. The signed plastic and acrylic canvas nearly doubled its pre-auction estimate to fetch nearly £4.7 million ($7.8 million), a record for the artist.
