The 20th edition of Paris Photo will feature 173 exhibiting galleries and publishers from 35 different countries.
Taking place this year from November 10-13 at the majestic Grand Palais in Paris, the celebrated international fair aims to expand and develop visitors’ understanding of the photographic medium and boost its status in the art world.
Since its inception in 1997, Paris Photo has been a defining presence in the field and remains the annual meeting point for collectors, artists, and photography lovers alike.
This year’s fair is set to be slightly larger than the 19th edition, which, under the new leadership of director Florence Bourgeois, had already expanded on previous years’ offerings. Varying from regular exhibitors such as Budapest’s Vintage Galeria, to brand new arrivals such as Żak|Branicka gallery, Paris Photo 2016 will see 26 more exhibitors than last year, and include a total of 40 new exhibitors.
Among the first-timers are also several Parisian galleries such as Baudoin Lebon, Frank Elbaz, and Laurent Godi, who clearly weren’t put off by either the cancellation of the fair’s West Coast offshoots due to lack of sales, or the forced early closure of Paris Photo in 2015 after the November 13 terror attacks.
“We remain committed to offering our public one of the most beautiful art shows today and the largest panorama of the medium of photography,” Florence Bourgeois told artnet news in a statement. “In celebration of our 20th edition, we are excited to present a program full of revelations to be discovered both before the fair, and at the Grand Palais this November.”
Following its successful debut in 2015, the large-scale exhibition project PRISMES will return, emphasizing the versatility of the medium by bringing together exceptional large format, serial works and installations in the monumental Salon d’Honneur. This year, the PRISMES sector will showcase major works and specially commissioned projects, as well as new works by Douglas Gordon and Noémie Goudal, and projects by Zofia Kulik, Edward Burtynsky, Penelope Umbrico, Gonzalo Lebrija, Dinh Q. Le, and William Klein.
“We are thrilled by the support of the galleries for the PRISMES sector, launched in 2015,” the fair’s artistic director, Christoph Wiesner, has said. “PRISMES will offer exciting new perspectives this year with a diverse selection of important historical works to contemporary creations by young artists.”
The full public program for Photo Paris will be announced in July, and will include exhibitions, awards, book signings, and round table discussions with leading figures in the field.
