The Whitechapel Gallery’s Iwona Blazwick Gives Tips to Would-be Collectors

The Whitechapel Gallery director’s advice to collecting novices is no-nonsense. Writing for the Telegraph ahead of London’s art fair Art14, Blazwick starts with the very practical: “How much wall-space you have will determine the size of the work.” Reading magazines, visiting galleries, and keeping a close eye on emerging talents all feature on a list that yields little surprise. Perhaps Blazwick’s best tip is to not overlook limited edition produced by institutions. “The link to the exhibition also means that gallery editions tend to accumulate in value,” she confides. Considering the Whitechapel Gallery’s own gorgeous selection, that’s one piece of advice which should be easy to follow.
