Price Check! Here’s What Sold—and for How Much—at Art Basel Miami Beach 2021

Here's what dealers say they sold last week.

After another Twilight Zone-esque year in the art world, the end of Art Basel in Miami Beach finally signals the end of the 2021 season. Now all that’s left to do is take in the breathtakin(ly long) list of works sold at the fair, and try to figure out who bought what.

In a maze-like warren of more than 250 booths, the biggest reported sale of the weekend was of Picasso’s 1967 painting Mousquetaire et Femme a la Fleur for around $20 million at Helly Nahmad Gallery. It’s a pretty steep markup for the blue and grey canvas, which sold at a Christie’s Impressionist sale in November 2008 for just over $9 million, landing smack in the middle of its presale estimate of $8 to $10 million.

Who bought the work is still an open question, and galleries rarely reveal that information. But we do know that elsewhere, Libbie Mugrabi went on something of a buying spree, notably snapping up a $150,000 pink neon piece by Tracey Emin reading “It’s a Crime to Live With Someone You Don’t Love” at White Cube Gallery. (Libbie, of course, was caught up in a complicated and acrimonious split with husband David Mugrabi.)

We’ve rounded up reported sales from the Miami fair below. As always, bear in mind that some dealers occasionally (and maybe even, ahem, quite often) report inflated prices to pad the business books, while others prefer to give asking prices or price ranges. We do not include sales unaccompanied by figures, so the galleries that tend to disclose numbers are disproportionately represented here. All prices are converted to USD for ease of reading.
