Last night the celebrity and fashion worlds got together to fête the Metropolitan’s Costume Institute exhibition, China: Through the Looking GlassVogue‘s editor-in-chief, artistic director, and the night’s co-host, Anna Wintour, has been hosting it since 1999.

Everyone from Madonna and Amal Almuddin Clooney to rising designers Maxwell Osborne and Dao-Yi Show from Public School were dressed to the nines; it was interesting to see how guests interpreted “Chinese white tie.” Vogue‘s creative director Grace Coddington looked stylish and comfortable in a blue and white silk pajama set, FKA twigs wore a Matisse dancer-inspired dress by Scottish designer Christopher Kane, while timeless it-girl Chloe Sevigny chose silk Chinoiserie by J.W. Anderson. And who didn’t notice Sarah Jessica Parker’s custom foot tall flame-shaped headdress by Phillip Treacy?

The grandest entrance of them all, hands down, was Rihanna. The singer walked the red carpet in a canary embroidered silk and fur-trimmed robe by up-and-coming Chinese couture designer Guo Pei, who also had two items on display in the exhibition, including a stunning gold embroidered armor-like dress that greets you at the show’s entrance. Kudos to Rihanna for being true to the theme and actually wearing a Chinese designer to the benefit.

“I’m so in love with this dress, but the train is insane!” She told VF.com on the red carpet. “I can’t really walk in it without any help. But it’s so worth it. I love this dress so much! It’s Chinese couture and it’s made by Guo Pei. It’s handmade by one Chinese woman and it took her two years to make. I found it online.”
