13 Works Stolen from Austrian Gallery
Thirteen works on paper by Bernhard Gwiggner were stolen from an exhibition at Linz’s ICON-Galerie, the APA reports. The lithographs are part of a 701-piece work titled, Dao ji jing (2013). Thus, the theft was only discovered when the gallery was deinstalling the exhibition. The 13 missing pieces were works on folded paper, a medium known as leporello. There are 81 of the self-supporting folded series of lithographs in the work.
According to reports, police are unsure if the thief was acting alone or was part of a group. However, the do believe that the theft took place in broad daylight, some time during the exhibition’s run. Because the lithographs were removed from the rest of the work, it’s difficult to say what, if any, value they would hold on the black market.
