A prominent group of Berlin art-worlders has renewed calls for the Chinese government to allow Ai Weiwei to travel freely. Akademie der Künst president Klaus Staeck and lawyer and former National Gallery friends group president, Peter Raue among others spoke at a press conference in Berlin’s Martin-Gropius-Bau museum on Wednesday outlining the legal and philosophical frameworks under which the German government could act to get Ai Weiwei his passport back.
The museum will hold a retrospective of Ai’s work from April 3rd to July 7th of this year. The dissident Chinese artist also sent the following video message, which was also played during the conference:
