Art Basel in Miami Beach 2014 Boasts an Intimidating 267 Galleries

Now that you’ve got a place to stay, (see “Where to Stay During Art Basel in Miami Beach” and “The Most Extravagant of Airbnb for Art Basel in Miami Beach“), it’s time to start thinking about the art. Art Basel in Miami Beach has announced its exhibitor list for the 13th edition of the fair, slated to run December 4–7, 2014, at the Miami Beach Convention Center. And the whopping lineup of 267 international galleries—hailing from 31 countries on five continents—is enough to give even the most ambitious fair-goers pause.

Among the first-time galleries scheduled to make the trip to Miami this December are American galleries Clifton Benevento, Freedman Fitzpatrick, Honor Fraser, Garth Greenan Gallery, Michael Jon, Menconi + Schoelkopf, and Simone Subal Gallery, and Latin American dealers Central Galeria de Arte and Galeria Bergamin from Brazil, and Argentina’s SlyZmud. From Asia, new participants include Japan’s Take Ninagawa and Y++ Wada Fine Arts, and Beijing Commune from China.

No less than 100 percent of last year’s exhibitors from the fair’s primary Gallery sector reapplied for the 2014 edition, which features a total of 192 exhibitor. Other sectors include Nova, with 34 younger galleries presenting work by a small number of artists; Positions, which allows 16 galleries to curate a major project by one of their artists; and the second iteration of Edition, where 12 galleries will show works in multiples or prints.

The fair’s project-based sectors are Public, an outdoor sculpture exhibition curated by Public Art Fund director and chief curator Nicholas Baume; Kabinett, which will eschew the traditional gallery booth in favor of art “interventions”; and Film, in which curators David Gryn, director of London’s Artprojx, and Zurich collector This Brunner have embraced the theme of playfulness.

Making its debut at this year’s fair is Survey, a new sector of the fair that will feature art historical projects in the spirit of the original Art Basel’s Feature section. Participating galleries will include Brazil’s Galeria Bergamin, Denmark’s Galleri Bo Bjerggaard, Austria’s Charim Galerie, New York’s Andrew Edlin Gallery—presenting a two-artist show of Henry Darger and Marcel Storr—Spain’s Espaivisor, and Japan’s Y++ Wada Fine Arts.

And for those already plotting their tweets and Instagram posts, know that the fair’s official hashtag will henceforth be #artbasel for all three of Art Basel’s fairs, rather than the #ABMB and #ABMB2013 of years past.
