Bruno Bischofberger Prepares to Unveil Mega Art Complex

Swiss dealer Bruno Bischofberger will open a gigantic new Zurich gallery to the public in June 2015 with a solo show by Spanish painter Miquel Barceló.
Spread over 250,000 square feet, the complex is currently open by appointment only. It comprises galleries, offices, storage, as well as spaces for Bischofberger’s extensive art collection. A folk art museum is also in the pipeline.
The new complex has been years in the making and radically transforms the site of a former car factory in the south east of the city. Designed by Bischofberger’s daughter, Nina Baier-Bischofberger, and her husband, Florian Baier, it features a monumental central hall and is almost entirely built with prefabricated concrete elements.
A staunch champion of American artist in Europe, Bischofberger had been located in Central Zurich since the 1970s. This is a major move for the dealer, who is also giving up his gallery space in the luxury resort of St Moritz, rented since 2009 (see Vito Schnabel Taking Over Bruno Bischofberger’s Gallery Space.)
In the last two years, Bischofberger has taken the bold step of foregoing Art Basel. The fair is yet to release the 2015 exhibitors list for its forthcoming Swiss edition, but he’s expected to remain MIA at least until the new gallery is opened.
