The Barcelona-based artist duo of Kill Cooper and Dave Glass, who go by the name Hungry Castles, has unleashed upon the world what may well be the epitome of Instagram-bait art: Laser Cat (2014). As its name indicates, the sculpture combines the cute factor of a giant, golden, inflatable cat head with the retro appeal of neon laser beams, for an effect that is basically an Internet meme made physical. The sculpture, which had its debut in April at Miami’s ADC Festival, also projects crowd-sourced artworks from its eyes, making it something like a mobile Tumblr blog or Instagram feed.

“We wanted to give people an opportunity to reconnect with their inner artist and have the chance for it to be shown the world—by the means of being projected from a huge inflatable cat head,” Cooper and Glass told the Creators Project. “Our goal has always been to make big, playful things of cultural impact and use design thinking in a way that truly engages people.” Artists hoping to have their work spewing from Laser Cat‘s eyes can submit images here. To date, more than 15,000 works have been uploaded to Laser Cat.

The duo has made a name for itself with large inflatable sculptures. Its previous forays into the medium have included a really big Big Bird and an enormous rendering of the head of Lionel Richie. Betweem their work and that of Florentijn Hofman, maybe big, cute animal sculptures may go down in art history as the most popular artworks of our era.

Since its south Florida unveiling, Laser Cat has beamed down in Barcelona, with plans afoot to take it to New York, London, and Dubai.
