Bonhams Is Selling Artwork By Its Own Staff – A special online auction that runs until August 4 will feature 53 works by 20 of the auction houses’s own specialists, including head of contemporary art, Irene Sieberger, and head of Asian art, Edward Luper. The proceeds from buyer’s premium will be donated to Cure Parkinson’s. (Antiques Trade Gazette)

Sotheby’s Launch of Generative Art Program with Artist Vera Molnár Tops $1 Million – The auction house’s first on-chain generative art sale of 500 unique works by the early computer art pioneer sold out in under an hour and fetched 631 ETH, or $1.2 million. The sale also marked Sotheby’s first-ever Dutch auction. (Press release) 

Simpson Kalisher Has Died Aged 96 – The American street photographer started out in the 1950s as a photojournalist for titles like Sports Illustrated and Business Week, making a name for images that captured everyday life in Manhattan. His self-funded publication of Railroad Men (1961) received critical acclaim for its portrayal of workers accompanied by interviews. (New York Times) 

Fire at Giant Buddha Temple in China – Local authorities are still examining the cause of the fire, which almost brought the temple to the ground on Monday, July 24, but had no casualties. The old temple was first built in the 5th century, although the giant buddha statue had been replaced with a replica in 1998 after being damaged during the Cultural Revolution. (Metro) 

MOVERS & SHAKERS 

Loewe Foundation / Studio Voltaire Award – The seven recipients of the second edition of the award, which was developed in response to artists’ need for affordable workspaces, and provides rent-free studio space and a bursary over two years. The recipients this year are Babajide Brian, Maz Murray, Emily Pope, Shamica Ruddock, Meera Shakti Osborne, Nick Smith and Ossie Williams. (Press release)

Pace Gallery Signs 27-Year-Old Painter Pam Evelyn – The British abstract painter, who only completed her MFA last year, will have her first solo show with Pace in London this fall. (ARTnews)

Wrongly Incarcerated Artist Gary Tyler To Get First Solo Show – The artist served 41 years in prison after being falsely accused of shooting a white boy in a racist attack against Black school students in 1974. While incarcerated, Tyler learnt to quilt and a new series of his textiles will go on show for We are the Willing at Library Street Collective in Detroit (through September 6). The works reflect on life since his release in 2016 at the age of 57. (Hyperallergic)

Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art Presents Beeple’s Human One – The 2021 generative video follows a figure with a space helmet that takes us on an immersive journey to witness humankind’s first steps into the metaverse. Beeple shot to fame when Christie’s sold one of his NFTs for $69 million, and this show marks his U.S. museum debut. (Press release)
