Marina Abramović Finally Heads Down Under for New Gig

Marina Abramović is going Down Under in 2015, reports the Sydney Morning Herald. She’s being commissioned to create a new artwork in Sydney by Australian billionaire arts philanthropist John Kaldor, who has also worked with Tino Sehgal, John Baldessari, Vanessa Beecroft, and Jeff Koons. The project will take place at Pier 2/3 in June 2015.

While Abramović participated in Kaldor’s group show, “13 Rooms” in 2013, she was (ironically) not present, and her piece Luminosity, which featured a naked performer perched on a bicycle seat mounted on the wall, was instead performed by local artists. She did not visit Australia at all for the exhibition.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that Abramović’s work will also be displayed at Tasmania’s Museum of Old and New Art, collector David Walsh’s privately held institution which has been described as a “subversive adult Disneyland.”

No word yet on what either performances will entail, but after 512 Hours in London (see artnet News’ Long Lines for Marina Abramović’s Serpentine Gallery Show) and more recently, Generator in New York’s Sean Kelly Gallery (see artnet News’ Marina Abramović’s “No Selfies” Show Comes to Sean Kelly), we can only assume it will be strange, spectacular, and extremely crowded.
