The Sharjah Biennial has announced the winners of its 2015 prize. This year, the honor was bestowed upon four artists: American filmmaker Eric Baudelaire, Spanish multimedia artist Asunción Molinos Gordo, and Palestinian multimedia collaborators Basel Abbas and Ruanne Abou-Rahme. Argentinian sculptor Adrián Villar Rojas and Turkish multimedia artist Fahrelnissa Zeid were awarded honorable mentions.

The award is granted to artists represented in the biennial’s current iteration, “The Past, the Present, the Possible,” organized by Eungie Joo with associate curator Ryan Inouye, and chosen by jurors selected by the Sharjah Art Foundation.

The prize has been given every two years, in conjunction with the biennial, since 1993. This year’s jurors were Koyo Kouoh, founding artistic director of Dakar-based art center RAW Material Company; Suha Shoman, founder and chair of Darat al-Funun/The Khalid Shoman Foundation in Amam, Jordan, an initiative supporting Arab artists; and artist Park Chang-Kyong, artistic director of the international art biennial, Mediacity Seoul 2014.

While the foundation does not publicly reveal the dollar amount of the prize money, Art Radar reports that in previous years, winners have split a $30,000 grant.

Thanks to the biennial foundation’s daring decision to open during the same week as the Armory Show, New Yorkers may be guilty of forgetting about the United Arab Emirates-based exhibition in the midst of last week’s art fair pandemonium (see 2015 Sharjah Biennial Will Open Week of the Armory Show). But for members of the international art elite, the biennial is a key stop just before Art Basel in Hong Kong and the Venice Biennale (rumor has it Venice’s new dates were the reason for Sharjah’s own calendar shift).

“Sharjah Biennial 12: The Past, the Present, the Possible” remains on view until June 5.
