Artist Frances Stark and Writer Mark Godfrey Win 2015 Absolut Art Award

Frances Stark wins the 2015 Absolut Art Award

Absolut has announced that the winners of the 2015 Absolut Art Award are the artist Frances Stark, in the “Art Work” category, and the curator and writer Mark Godfrey, in the “Art Writing” category.
The winners were chosen from a shortlist of ten artists and writers (see Trisha Donnelly, Camille Henrot Among Absolut Art Awards Finalists)
Stark will receive a €20,000 cash prize as well as a €100,000 budget to produce a new artwork, a “pedagogical opera, in which music and education are mixed to tell a recent history of America,” according to the press release.
Godfrey also receives a €20,000 stipend, in addition to a €25,000 budget to edit “an anthology dedicated to ‘The Black Art Debate’ and African American art in the 1960s and 70s.” The book will center around a group of artists including Frank Bowling, Melvin Edwards, Sam Gilliam, Al Loving, Jack Whitten, and William T. Williams.
“Each in their own field, Frances Stark and Mark Godfrey have proven to be original thinkers who are helping to reshape the boundaries of art and criticism respectively,” Massimiliano Gioni, 2015 jury president, said in a statement (see Massimiliano Gioni Leads Absolut Art Jury).
“The jury and Absolut are excited to allow the winners to expand the horizons of their research and help them produce works which we are sure will be “ground-breaking and thought provoking,” Gioni added.
