Art Basel in Hong Kong has announced the series of 20 projects and installations that will make up the Encounters sector in the fair’s upcoming 2015 edition. Twenty artists from Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Belgium, Germany, Portugal, the UK, and the US will be featured.

This year’s Editions has a new curator in Alexie Glass-Kantor, executive director of Artspace in Sydney. She has drawn on landscape urbanism as inspiration, looking to quiet spaces that offer respites from the hustle and bustle of life in modern metropolises. She has interspersed the sector’s large-scale sculptural installations across four “medidians” throughout the massive art fair, breaking up the endless sea of gallery booths.

“There are distinct thematics that knit through each of the meridians, woven together through visual association and conceptual threads that exemplify how art can resituate experience and enliven the viewer,” said Glass-Kantor in a statement. “Many works alter or revisit our view of the world, representing it not as we ‘know’ it to be, but rather as we innately sense or imagine it to be.”

Encounters will premiere new work from eleven artists, as well as nine previously exhibited works. Among the new artworks will be David Claerbout’s Radio Piece, a video and radio installation that utilizes images of densely populated Hong Kong to make a statement on our mental state of mind. Other highlights will include Lee Ufan’s Relatum, a delicately balanced work of rock and steel, and Shooshie Sulaiman’s politically-charged SEA Brothers Rubber Estate of 16 March, which skewers her native Malaysia for political corruption and the environmental dangers of rubber harvesting.

Art Basel in Hong Kong will run March 15–17, 2015, with an impressively large slate of 231 galleries from 37 countries and territories on hand for its third edition.
